Can Taoists Smoke and Drink Alcohol?
Paul PengShare
Taoism places great emphasis on health preservation and attaches importance to the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. It believes that smoking and drinking are extremely bad habits, which are detrimental to both health and spiritual cultivation.
The "Three-Character Classic of Taoist Health Preservation" states: "Smoke belongs to fire. Fire restrains metal, which harms the lung qi and can lead to the growth of tubercle bacilli." Taoism even regards "drinking alcohol" as one of the "Five Precepts".
Smoking and drinking go against the nature of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, and they harm the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. If one indulges in them freely, it will surely pose a threat to health.
In addition, smoking and drinking are acts of seeking pleasure, which can easily lead people to degenerate and become addicted. People like this are impossible to fathom the Way of Heaven and will never be able to attain the Tao.
However, some people think that smoking and drinking are just ordinary matters and there is no need to make a fuss about them.
It should be noted that the more ordinary a matter seems to us, the easier it is for us to indulge. Therefore, the Taoist patriarchs established the regulations of the "Five Precepts" to warn disciples to pay attention to these so-called trivial matters in daily life. Once people understand this principle and are aware that the reverse operation of the Five Elements will continuously erode the body and mind, and if they can be vigilant, they can transcend life and death. This is also in line with the principle stated in the "Classic of the Hidden Tao" that "Heaven has five virtues, and those who perceive them will thrive."
