Sun Biyun (1345-1417) was from Fengyi (present-day Dali County, Shaanxi Province) during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.

As recorded in Records of Wudang Mountain: In his youth, Sun Biyun was fond of immortal arts. He traveled to Huashan Mountain (the Western Great Mountain) and visited all the relics left by Chen Tuan. He lived in rock caves, studied Taoist scriptures, studied the I Ching (Book of Changes) by comparing related theories, and explored the essence of the doctrines of Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor) and Laozi. Later, he became a disciple of Zhang Sanfeng at Wudang Mountain.

In the 27th year of the Hongwu reign (1391), he was summoned to the capital by imperial edict.

In the 10th year of the Yongle reign (1412), the Yongle Emperor (Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty) summoned him to the capital again, bestowed poems and essays upon him, and officially appointed him as the abbot of Nanyan Palace on Wudang Mountain by imperial order.

He authored Collected Works of Biyun (Biyun Ji).
