Xu Mingdao 许明道 — The 赤子 Alchemist of Tongbai Mountain
Paul PengShare
Xu Mingdao 许明道 was a native of Xinjian in Jiangxi Province, living during the reign of Emperor Xiaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty. His courtesy name was Ziwei 子微. He wandered as a hermit on Tongbai Mountain 桐柏山, received a transmission in the Golden Elixir tradition, studied under a second master, and left behind a single text — a text whose title contains one of the most evocative images in all of Taoist inner alchemy: the Red Child 赤子.

During the Chunxi era, Xu Mingdao was wandering as a Taoist hermit on Tongbai Mountain — a range in present-day Zhejiang Province with a long history of Taoist association, particularly with the Shangqing tradition. It was here that he encountered the True Person Peng Mengqu 彭梦赤.
The encounter followed the pattern that runs through virtually every major transmission in the inner alchemy tradition: a practitioner who has been cultivating seriously, in a place of natural power, meets a realized master who recognizes their readiness and imparts a teaching. Peng Mengqu transmitted to Xu Mingdao the doctrine of the Golden Elixir of Returning Cinnabar — 还丹金丹 (huándān jīndān) — a core framework of Taoist inner alchemy.
After his transmission from Peng Mengqu, Xu Mingdao studied under a second master, Xiao Yingsou 萧应宿. From this combined foundation, he authored the text for which he is remembered: the Huandan Mijue Yang Chizi Shenfang 还丹秘诀养赤子神方 — Secret Formula for Returning the Elixir and Nourishing the Divine Essence of the Innocent Child.
The image of the Red Child 赤子 (chìzǐ) is one of the most layered in all of Taoist thought. It appears in the Tao Te Ching, where Laozi describes the sage as one who has recovered the quality of a newborn — soft, undifferentiated, full of vital force, without the accumulated tensions of adult life. In the inner alchemy tradition, this image became a technical term.
The fact that Xu Mingdao studied under two masters before writing his text is worth noting. In the inner alchemy tradition, a single transmission was considered foundational but not necessarily complete. Different masters emphasized different aspects: one might be stronger on the theoretical framework, another on the specific methods of breath cultivation and obtaining qi, another on the later stages of spirit refinement.
Xu Mingdao's text synthesizes what he received from both. The title's structure reflects this: the "Secret Formula for Returning the Elixir" points to the foundational Golden Elixir doctrine from Peng Mengqu; the "Nourishing the Divine Essence of the Innocent Child" points to the more advanced cultivation of the spiritual embryo that his second period of study deepened.
Xu Mingdao left no school, no lineage of named disciples, no record of imperial audiences. What he left was a text — preserved in the Daoist Canon (Daozang 道藏) — that captures a specific moment in Song-era inner alchemy: the period when the tradition was being refined and committed to writing by practitioners who had received genuine transmissions and wanted to preserve what they had been given.
The Daozang is vast — over 1,400 texts compiled across centuries. The fact that Xu Mingdao's single-volume work made it into that canon is itself a form of recognition. Someone judged it worth preserving. That judgment has held for eight hundred years.
If the image of the Red Child — the recovery of an original, unconditioned state through disciplined inner work — resonates with you, you are touching something that runs through the entire Taoist tradition, from Laozi through the inner alchemists of the Song to the Zhengyi lineage at Longhu Mountain today. The names and methods change. The underlying question — how do we return to what we originally are? — does not.
