The Material

The blocks are carved from thunderstruck jujube wood — a rare material in Taoist ritual tradition. When lightning strikes a jujube tree, it is understood to concentrate the Yang energy of heaven into the wood itself. The result is a substance that carries an unusual charge, one that practitioners have long considered especially suited to ritual objects meant to bridge the human and the cosmic.

The Symbols

Each block is engraved with the Taiji and Bagua — the two foundational diagrams of Taoist cosmology. The Taiji encodes the relationship between Yin and Yang: not opposition, but mutual arising. The Bagua maps the eight primary states through which energy moves in the world. Together, they make this set a working instrument of Taoist thought, not merely a decorative object.

How It Is Used

The blocks are cast and read according to traditional divination method. The combination of faces that appear — Yin or Yang — corresponds to one of the trigrams, which in turn points toward a quality of the present moment: its nature, its direction, what it calls for. This is a practice of attention, not prediction.

Consecration

Every set has been consecrated by Taoist masters at the Celestial Masters' Mansion, Longhu Mountain — the founding seat of Chinese Taoism. Consecration is the final step of making: it activates the object's ritual function and aligns it with the tradition it belongs to.
