What is the Baojin 包巾?

Paul Peng
Baojin, also known as "Zajin" or "Fujin", is a square piece of cloth with straps attached to its four corners, which can be tied around the head. A hat ornament can be placed in the center of the front part of the scarf, but most of them do not use such an ornament.

Baojin is the least formal headscarf in Taoism. Those who have just entered the Taoist sect and have not yet formally apprenticed to a master wear this scarf. Some people think that it should not be included in the "Nine Scarves" (a set of traditional Taoist headwear).

Sancai Tuhui (Illustrated Compendium of Three Realms) states: "Fujin was originally the attire of commoners in ancient times, and it began to be worn by scholars in the late Han Dynasty." However, nowadays, some formal Taoist priests also wear this scarf.
