The Taoist Ritual Arts 道教法术
Paul PengShare
Taoist magic, also known as "fangshu" (occult arts) or "xianshu" (immortal arts), is a means by which Taoism practices self-cultivation, prays for the gods to deliver souls from suffering, and suppresses demons and wards off evil. It more or less has some superstitious elements, but at the same time, it also has certain positive effects.
For example, the external alchemy and prescriptions in Taoist magic have certain value for the development of medicine and pharmacology; internal alchemy, bigu (abstinence from grains), daoyin (guidance and stretching exercises), etc., when practiced properly, can help dispel diseases and strengthen the body; while activities such as qirang (prayer and supplication), demon suppression, and rain prayer are reflections of the ancient Chinese belief culture.
