The Explanatory Guide to Dao De Jing

The author of this work is unknown, and it is believed to have been composed during the Northern and Southern Dynasties or the Sui-Tang period. It was not included in theZhengtongDaozang(Orthodox Daoist Canon).
Currently, one fragmentary Dunhuang manuscript (S6044) survives, with both the beginning and end damaged, retaining approximately 15 lines of text. The original work had no title; its content consists of explanations of the titles and thematic meanings of each chapter of theDao De Jing.

Onishi Jinsaburo proposed the manuscript’s title based on its content in hisCatalog of Daoist Texts from Dunhuang.
