Situation Demon Control (制境魔): The Temptation Nobody Resists

The practitioner passes a market stall or pauses in a strange room, and one object catches the eye — a thing of beauty, a thing of desire — and in the instant of the glance, attachment is born. A sound that should not have been heard enters the ear. The tradition names it: the situation-demon. It has tested him with nothing but a sight and a sound. He does not flee the place. He clears the mind and settles the spirit until the body is transparent, like glass, and the attachment has nowhere to attach.

⚡ The Demon of the Passing Glance

The situation-demon is the most minimal of the ten: it needs no haunting, no crowd, no pride, no illness. It works through a single moment of circumstance. The classical record lists its instruments — a thing seen on the road or in a strange room, a sound that should not have been heard, a form glimpsed within the room — and the mechanism: the instant the glance stirs attachment, the demon has tested the practitioner. The test is nothing more than a sight and a sound.

🔍 The Greed That Fits in a Glance

The record is precise about the psychology: the practitioner sees an object and 'one thought of greed and attachment rises.' The sight is not the danger; the thought is. The eye meets something beautiful, the mind clasps it, and in that clasp the practitioner is no longer practicing. The demon is not the object — the object is innocent. The demon is the attachment that the circumstance provoked.

📜 The Body Made Transparent as Glass

The first defense is internal and total. The practitioner gathers the mind and washes away all thought, guards the spirit and settles it, until the body contains the truth of the great emptiness — 'clear within and without, like glass, with nothing to stain it.' The image is exact: a body so transparent that attachment cannot find a surface to cling to. This is not a technique performed on the demon but a state achieved in the practitioner.

✨ The Pearl That Draws the Ten Directions

The second movement is a visualization of extraordinary economy. In the empty space before him, the practitioner visualizes a single jewel — faintly shining, its light just beginning — and the ten directions come to face it. The pearl is the fixed point of the cleared mind, and the ten directions are the world arriving to it without attachment. The method closes with swallowing the hidden names of the heavens, reciting the Pure-Bright Precious Scripture once, and wearing the Upper Clarity Nine Elders' demon-subduing seal. The demon, the record concludes, naturally retreats.

🌀 The Minimal Demon, the Maximal Method

The situation-demon method is the philosophical peak of the ten-demon system. Its enemy is the smallest possible — a passing attachment — and its defense is the largest possible — the transparency of the entire body to emptiness. Its survival shows the Lingbao tradition at its most contemplative, a demon-control method that barely involves the demon at all. Modern scholarship reads it as a structured mindfulness protocol: the arising of attachment is noticed, named, and dissolved through the cultivation of inner transparency.
