Superior Liberation (上尸解): The Daylight Exit Nobody Names
The master dies at noon, in the full light, in front of witnesses — and the tradition records it not as a death but as a departure of the superior grade. The household has seen what it has seen: the body remains, the light does not. In the encyclopedias of the tradition, this is the ranking made visible: the grade of the liberation follows the light under which it happened, and the daylight exit sits at the top of the ladder.

⚡ The Concept's Precise Boundary
The grading of corpse liberation turns on a single axis: the light. The tradition ranked departures by the conditions under which they occurred, and the daylight departure — the one performed in full visibility, before witnesses, under the open sky — was named the superior grade. The implication is precise: the greater the liberty of the departure, the more openly it could be done. A liberation that needed the dark, the closed room, or the ambiguous circumstance was by that very fact a lesser working. The light, in this grading, is not scenery; it is the measure of the art.
📜 The Classical Record
The grading is preserved in the great Northern Zhou encyclopedia Wushang Biyao, in its section on the grades of liberation. The text is concise and categorical: it states that the one who departs in the daylight is called the superior corpse liberation — 白日去者,谓之上尸解也. The same corpus frames the daytime exit as the visible face of the art, the departure that could be claimed openly, while the night and twilight grades were transmitted as the accommodations of those who could not command the full light.
🔍 The Practice Level
At the level of practice, the superior grade is not a separate method so much as the master class of the common one. The staged death, the closed room, and the substitute are the ordinary machinery; the superior departure is what the machinery looks like when it is strong enough to be performed in daylight, in public, without concealment. The tradition's accounts of the superior grade accordingly stress the witnesses and the open sky rather than the technique — the light itself is the signature of the working.
✨ The Ladder of the Departures
The superior grade stands at the top of a graded system that the encyclopedias transmit as complete. Below the daylight departure stand the departures of the lesser registers — those that required the night, the shadow, the ambiguous circumstance. The grading is not moral but cosmological: the daylight belongs to the yang, the open, the complete; the night belongs to the yin, the hidden, the partial. A departure in the yang register was by definition more complete than one that had to work in the shadow. The light is the doctrine.
🌀 The Modern Reassessment
Modern scholarship reads the daylight grade as the tradition's own audit of its claim. The doctrine of corpse liberation had to explain deaths that looked like ordinary deaths — and the grading by light supplied the distinction: the superior departure happened in full view, and the ordinary-looking exits were by that logic the lesser grades. The ranking protected the art from its own appearances. For the historian, the sentence that names the daylight grade is a document of how the tradition sorted its evidence: by the light, the witnesses, and the visibility of the claim.
