Cao Gujiu était une figure de la dynastie Song du Nord.
Il était également connu sous le nom de Gu Xiu ; son nom d'origine était Jingxiu, et son nom littéraire était Hunchengzi.

De nature calme et tranquille, il n'aspirait pas à une carrière officielle. Déterminé à s'installer dans les falaises et les vallées pour cultiver son caractère et nourrir sa vitalité, il changea donc son nom pour celui qu'il porte actuellement (Cao Gujiu).
Il prétendait avoir rencontré les deux immortels Zhong Liquan et Lü Dongbin , qui lui auraient enseigné les secrets essentiels de l'Élixir d'Or de Huanzhen. Peu après, il atteignit le Dao (Tao).
