Chen Shiyuan était un prêtre taoïste du mont Longhu, dans le Jiangxi, à la fin de la dynastie Song et au début de la dynastie Yuan .

En la 18e année de l'ère Zhiyuan (1281), il fut officiellement nommé « Maître du Dharma Chongxuan Hongjiao Tongmiao » (un titre désignant une connaissance taoïste profonde et une intégrité morale), « Daojiao Duti » (un poste administratif supérieur dans le taoïsme ), et occupa simultanément le poste de « Tiandian Shangda Qingzhengyi Palace Affairs » (responsable de la gestion des affaires du Shangda Qingzhengyi Palace, un temple taoïste important).
