Ji Zonglao était un personnage ayant vécu sous le règne de l'empereur Xuanzong de la dynastie Tang .

Il fut officiellement enregistré comme prêtre taoïste à Yuzhang (une ancienne région couvrant une partie de l'actuelle province du Jiangxi).

Il a parcouru des montagnes célèbres, à la recherche de mentors pour étudier le taoïsme .

La deuxième année de l'ère Dazhong (848 ap. J.-C.), il rencontra un ermite taoïste vêtu de haillons dans un petit temple taoïste d'un village de Shuzhou. Cet ermite maîtrisait les arts taoïstes de façon extraordinaire. Ji Zonglao souhaita étudier auprès de lui, mais l'ermite disparut sans laisser de traces, et Ji ne sut jamais où il se trouvait par la suite.
