Jie Yan était originaire de l'État de Wu durant la période des Trois Royaumes .
On dit qu'il résidait à Fangshan, dans le district de Jian'an. Il étudia auprès du duc Baiyang (Du Mi) et reçut l'enseignement du « Xuanyi Dao » (la Voie de l'Unité Mystérieuse). Selon le volume 5 de Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Le Miroir complet des véritables immortels à travers les âges qui ont incarné le Dao ), Sun Quan, le souverain de Wu, le traita avec une grande courtoisie et souhaita apprendre de lui les méthodes taoïstes, mais Jie Yan refusa.
Fou de rage, Sun Quan voulut le tuer. Cependant, Jie Yan était capable d'invisibilité et de métamorphose, et on ignora dès lors où il se trouvait.
