Lin Taigu était originaire de Taiyuan, dans la province de Bingzhou (aujourd'hui dans le Shanxi), au début de la dynastie Song du Nord. Son nom de courtoisie était Xiangxian et son titre taoïste Chunhezi.
En grandissant, il chercha des maîtres pour apprendre le Dao et voyagea dans la région de Qilu (aujourd'hui province du Shandong).
L'empereur Taizong de la dynastie Song le convoqua et lui offrit une résidence dans la montagne de Jingzhao. Lin Taigu se fit alors appeler « l'ermite de la montagne de Jingzhao ». Plus tard, il vécut en ermite à Huayang, dans le district d'Yizhou, et prit également le titre taoïste de « Monsieur Huayang ». Il écrivit Chanson de Longhu Huandan Jue (Odes sur le secret de l'élixir du retour du dragon-tigre) en un seul volume.
