Liu Dechang était originaire de Jinling (aujourd'hui la ville de Nanjing, province du Jiangsu) à la fin de la dynastie Tang .
À l'âge de dix-sept ans, il composa Le Chant du Grand Dao . Il étudia auprès de Wu Fatong, son mentor, et maîtrisa tous les arts taoïstes de ce dernier. Il résida au temple taoïste de Ziyang et ne quitta pas sa maison pendant dix ans.

Il reçut officiellement le titre de « Monsieur Dongwei Yuanjing » (Monsieur Profondément Perspicace et Primordialement Sérénité) et devint le 18e patriarche de l'école Shangqing (école de la Clarté Suprême) du taoïsme du Mont Mao.
