The meaning of Suchness in Taoism
"Zhen Ru" (真如, "Suchness" or "True Thusness") was originally a Buddhist term.
Buddhism holds that using language, thought, and other means to express the truth of things always involves some addition or subtraction, and cannot be perfectly appropriate. To express its reality, only the word "ru" (如, "thus" or "as it is") can be used as description. Cheng Weishi Lun, vol. 9: "Zhen (真) means true, showing it is not false; ru (如) means constant, showing it has no change. This suchness, in all stages, constantly is as its nature — therefore it is called suchness." Taoism borrowed this to refer to dao-nature and true nature.
