Nie Shaoyuan était originaire du comté de She (aujourd'hui dans la province d'Anhui) sous le règne du dernier empereur de la dynastie Tang du Sud. Son nom de courtoisie était Bozu, et il se faisait appeler « Wumingzi » (Maître sans nom).
Il est l'auteur d'œuvres telles que Zongxing Ji (Récit de la nature ancestrale), Xiuzhen Mijue (Formule secrète pour cultiver la perfection), et Wumingzi Caotang Ji (Récit de la chaumière de Maître Wumingzi).
