Tan Qiaoyan était un prêtre taoïste du mont Mao à la fin de la dynastie Tang .
Il accomplissait des actes de vertu discrets pour aider tous les êtres vivants : il laissait souvent de l'or sur la route pour soulager les pauvres et les nécessiteux.

Il utilisait parfois des talismans taoïstes pour chasser les fantômes et soigner les maladies.

Il est décédé au mont Heng (la Grande Montagne du Sud) durant l'ère Kaicheng de l'empereur Wenzong de la dynastie Tang (836-840).
