Wang Yan, originaire du Hedong (aujourd'hui dans la province du Shanxi), était connu sous le nom de Fuyuan sous la dynastie Tang . Ses ancêtres vivaient à l'origine à Taiyuan avant de s'installer au Hedong. Il devint moine taoïste au complexe taoïste de Jingyuan, dans le comté de Yongle.

Il prônait l'intégration du confucianisme , du bouddhisme et du taoïsme . La stèle de la Voie divine du seigneur Wang, ancien gouverneur provincial de Guozhou sous la dynastie Tang, rapporte qu'il a écrit des ouvrages sur la pensée taoïste, dont le Daoyi (Les Ailes du taoïsme), un texte en cinquante volumes.
