Zhang Bingyi était le 21e maître céleste de l' école Zhengyi (école orthodoxe de l'unité) du taoïsme.

Son nom de courtoisie était Wenfu, et il était le fils aîné de Zhang Chen.

Sa mère tomba enceinte après avoir rêvé qu'une tortue dorée pénétrait dans son ventre.
En grandissant, ses yeux étaient vifs et perçants, capables de voir des objets la nuit et même de voir à travers un mur.
Il voyageait souvent à travers montagnes et rivières, emportant avec lui une épée et un miroir. Il s'éteignit à l'âge de quatre-vingt-douze ans. En 1353, treizième année de l'ère Zhizheng de la dynastie Yuan, il reçut à titre posthume le titre de « Chongxuan Ziji Zhaohua Zhenjun » (Véritable Seigneur du Mystère Profond, du Pinacle Pourpre et de la Transformation Illumineuse).
