Zhang Xiangzhong était le 27e Maître Céleste de l'école Zhengyi (Unité Orthodoxe) du taoïsme .

Son nom de courtoisie était Gongchen, et il était le fils aîné de Zhang Pengzong.

Selon la légende, il marchait déjà à trois mois et parlait à cinq. À sept ans, il fut convoqué à la capitale impériale ; ses réponses aux questions de l’empereur répondirent pleinement aux attentes impériales. L’empereur lui offrit une robe pourpre et le nomma Maître Céleste Zhengyi.

Au cours de la 13e année de la période Zhizheng de la dynastie Yuan (1353), il reçut à titre posthume le titre honorifique de « Chongzhen Tonghui Zixuan Zhenjun » (Véritable Seigneur de la Vérité Vénérable, de la Grâce Universelle et du Mystère Pourpre).
