Zhao Ziran , initialement nommé Wang Jiu, était originaire de Taiping Fanchang (qui fait aujourd'hui partie de la province d'Anhui) durant la période Dazhong Xiangfu de la dynastie Song du Nord.
À l'âge de treize ans, il fut atteint d'une grave maladie. Son père lui promit que s'il guérissait, il deviendrait prêtre taoïste .

Plus tard, il rêva d'une figure divine qui lui enseigna la technique de bigu (Une pratique taoïste consistant à s'abstenir de céréales). Dès lors, il ne mangea que des fruits frais et ne but que de l'eau de source pure.
Il a composé une fois Le Chant de Yuan Dao (Le Chant du Dao Primordial), qui expose les principes essentiels de la culture taoïste.
