Presenting the Memorial 进表

paulpeng
"Presenting the Memorial" refers to the ritual in which Taoist priests submit memorial texts (green-script memorials) to the celestial court, also known as "submitting the memorial". Its procedures include opening the altar, inviting the sacred beings, and worshipping the memorial. The way it is used depends on the rank of the deity: presenting to the highest deity in Taoism is called "submitting the grand memorial", while presenting to ordinary deities is called "submitting the petition". Finally, the memorial text is incinerated, which is called "burning the memorial", aiming to send it to the celestial court, inform the Supreme Being, and invite all sacred beings to descend to the altar, bestow blessings and prolong life, and enable the ancestors' spirits to be delivered.

Jin Biao – Presenting the Memorial to Heaven

The Taoist rite of delivering the sacred petition (Qing Ci Biao Zhang) to the Celestial Court, invoking blessings, longevity and transcendence for all beings.

1. Etymology & Definition

进 (Jin): to advance, to present.
表 (Biao): the memorial tablet or petition.
Combined, Jin Biao is the ceremonial act of “presenting the memorial”—often called Shang Biao or Shang Shu according to the deity’s rank—where the written prayer is conveyed to Heaven through flame and fragrance.

2. Triple-Stage Sequence

  1. 启坛 (Qi Tan) – Opening the altar: purifying the space, lighting incense and summoning the celestial guardians.
  2. 请圣 (Qing Sheng) – Inviting the saints: hymns and mudras call forth the deities to witness the petition.
  3. 拜表 (Bai Biao) – Prostrating the memorial: the high priest recites the Biao Wen, then raises it skyward before consigning it to the sacred flame.

3. Rank & Ritual Fire

Memorials to the highest deities (e.g., the Jade Emperor) are termed Shang Da Biao—the Great Offering—while petitions to lesser immortals are Shang Shu. In the climactic Hua Biao (transformation by fire), the paper tablet is ignited; smoke becomes the chariot, ash the seal, ensuring the plea reaches the celestial bureaucracy.
