Xu Jing Heavenly Master: The Sacred Ode of the Crane's Call

Xu Jing Heavenly Master: The Sacred Ode of the Crane's Call

Paul Peng

Among the most luminous verses in the Zhengyi (正一派) tradition, the ode 《鹤鸣奉旨》"Crane's Call by Imperial Decree" — stands as a testament to the divine transmission received at Longhu Mountain (龙虎山). Composed by the 30th Heavenly Master Zhang Jixian (张继先), known by his honorific title Xu Jing Tianshi (虚靖天师), this lyric poem captures the very essence of Taoist cosmology: the stillness of the jade earth, the calming of the primordial seas, and the radiant unity of all celestial phenomena. 🌿

The Poem: Original Text & Meaning 🏮

The full text of 《鹤鸣奉旨》 reads:

玉土平平,正海息波澜,岳敛云烟。三景虚明,八表澄清,一月普照诸天。有流霞洞焕,映黍珠、徐下空玄。绝形言,见千真拱极,万气朝元。

当时鹤鸣夜半,感真符宝篆,特地亲传。碧湛龙文,红凝龟篆,绛衣无鬣蹁跹。计功成果就,垂真教、廓景飞仙已千年。亘灯灯续焰,光朗无边。

The opening stanza paints a vision of cosmic harmony: the jade earth lies serene, the primordial ocean stills its waves, and the sacred mountains draw in their clouds and mist. ☯️ The "Three Luminaries" (三景, referring to the Sun, Moon, and Stars) shine in perfect clarity; the "Eight Directions" (八表) are purified; and a single moon illuminates all the heavens — a classical Taoist metaphor for the undivided Dao permeating all realms.

The imagery of "flowing rosy clouds" (流霞) and the "millet pearl" (黍珠) descending through the void draws directly from inner alchemy (内丹) symbolism found in texts such as the 《灵宝毕法》 (Numinous Treasure Complete Method), a foundational scripture of the Tang dynasty Taoist canon. 🪷 The phrase "千真拱极,万气朝元" — "a thousand perfected ones encircle the Pole Star, ten thousand breaths return to the Origin" — echoes the cosmological framework of the 《道德经》 Chapter 16: "万物并作,吾以观复" (All things arise together; I observe their return).

The Midnight Crane: Divine Transmission at Longhu Mountain 🦢

The second stanza shifts to the pivotal moment of revelation: at midnight, a crane calls — and in that liminal hour, the true talismanic seals (真符宝篆) are personally transmitted. 🌙 This is not mere poetic flourish. Within the Zhengyi (正一派) tradition, founded by Zhang Daoling (张道陵) in the Eastern Han dynasty (东汉, 25–220 CE) at Heming Mountain (鹤鸣山, Crane-Call Mountain), the crane has always been the sacred messenger between heaven and earth.

🔥 The "dragon script" (龙文) in azure and the "turtle seal" (龟篆) in crimson refer to the two primary forms of celestial talismanic writing (符篆) used in Zhengyi ritual. These are not decorative symbols — they are understood as the living language of heaven, capable of commanding the forces of nature, dispelling malevolent energies, and opening pathways to divine protection. The 《正一法文》 (Zhengyi Ritual Texts), compiled across the Six Dynasties period (南北朝), documents the precise transmission lineage of these seals from Zhang Daoling through successive Heavenly Masters at Longhu Mountain.

The Nine-Word Mantra (九字真言) — "临兵斗者皆阵列在前" — is among the most potent protective formulas in the Taoist tradition, its origins traceable to the 《抱朴子》 (Baopuzi) by Ge Hong (葛洪) of the Eastern Jin dynasty (东晋, 317–420 CE). Wearing a bracelet inscribed with this mantra is a living practice of carrying the protective power of these ancient seals. 🪬

✨ If you wish to carry the protective energy of the Nine-Word Mantra in your daily life — just as the Heavenly Masters carried the celestial seals — the Nine-Word Mantra Bracelet (九字真言手链) is a meaningful way to embody this ancient tradition.

The Eternal Flame: A Thousand Years of Taoist Transmission 🕯️

🏮 The closing lines of the ode — "亘灯灯续焰,光朗无边" ("Lamp after lamp continues the flame, the light is boundless and clear") — are among the most celebrated in the Zhengyi liturgical corpus. This image of the unbroken lamp-flame is a direct metaphor for the transmission of the Dao itself: each generation of Heavenly Masters receives the flame from the last, and passes it forward, ensuring that the light of the Dao never dims.

Xu Jing Heavenly Master (虚靖天师, 1092–1127 CE) lived during the Northern Song dynasty (北宋), a period of intense Taoist literary and ritual flourishing. He was renowned not only for his mastery of talismanic arts (符法) but also for his poetic gifts — his verses were said to carry the same transformative power as the ritual seals themselves. The 《虚靖真君语录》 (Recorded Sayings of the True Lord Xu Jing) preserves many of his teachings on the unity of poetry, ritual, and inner cultivation. 🌿

The Five Thunder Talisman (五雷符) is one of the most powerful ritual instruments in the Zhengyi tradition — directly connected to the celestial authority invoked in this ode. Rooted in the Five Thunder Rites (五雷法) systematized during the Song dynasty (宋朝), it commands the forces of heaven to dispel darkness and restore cosmic order. ⚡

Conclusion: The Dao as Boundless Light ☯️

The ode 《鹤鸣奉旨》 is more than a poem — it is a ritual act in literary form. 🌿 Every image, every phrase, carries the weight of a living transmission: from the jade earth to the celestial seals, from the midnight crane to the lamp-flame that never dies. In the Zhengyi tradition, such verses are chanted in ritual context, their sounds understood to resonate with the very frequencies of heaven.

🏮 Xu Jing Heavenly Master reminds us that the Dao is not distant or abstract — it is the stillness beneath all movement, the light within all darkness, the flame that passes from hand to hand across a thousand years. To study this ode is to receive, in some small measure, the same transmission that the crane carried down from heaven on that sacred midnight at Longhu Mountain.
