Qingyuan Zhenren’s Daoist Commentary on the Duren Jing

Yuanshi Wuliang Duren Shangpin Miaojing Zhu (Commentary on the Supreme Wonderful Scripture of the Primordial Beginning for Delivering Beings Without Limit)

Originally attributed to "Zhenren Qingyuan of the East China Sea," who was presumably a Taoist priest of the Southern Song Dynasty.

The original work consists of three volumes and is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentaries) category of the Dongzhen (True Grotto) Section in the Daozang (Taoist Canon). At the beginning of the book, there is a preface by the Elder of Qinghe, praising Zhenren Qingyuan’s commentary on the Duren Jing (Scripture of Delivering Beings) for "dividing the content into eight key points, elaborating on two chapters in detail, initially clarifying the causes of rational principle, and ultimately revealing the secrets of the root of destiny."

The commentary focuses on interpreting the core meanings of the Duren Jing through the philosophical lens of the Daode Jing (Tao Te Ching): for the original chapters "Dongxuan" (Mysterious Grotto) and "Yuli" (Jade Calendar) in the scripture, it revises their titles, identifies eight key points, and provides detailed annotations to facilitate reading for beginners. Additionally, it excerpts texts from the Tiangong Jing (Scripture of the Heavenly Lord), supplements the original three chapters of the "Yuanshi Lingshu" (Spiritual Books of the Primordial Beginning), and revises them into four chapters.

Furthermore, after each section of the commentary, there are odes by the Elder of Qinghe, collative notes and eulogies by Guo Gangfeng.

At the end of the entire book, an appendix titled Lingyan of Reciting the Duren Jing (Efficacious Responses to Reciting the Scripture of Delivering Beings) is included, recording several short stories of auspicious responses to reciting the Duren Jing during the Chunxi, Shaoxi, Qingyuan, and Jiatai reign periods of the Southern Song Dynasty.
