What is the High Priest 高功?

High Priest (高功) is the title of a deacon in Taoist rituals. Together with the Supervisor of Offerings (Jianzhai) and the Chief Lecturer (Dujiang), they are collectively known as the "Three Masters" and jointly preside over fasting and ritual ceremonies (zhaijiao).

The High Priest holds the highest position among deacons. The incumbent must "possess inner moral integrity, maintain outer ceremonial dignity, command the reverence of both heaven and humanity, and be respected by both spirits and ghosts." During rituals, they are required to "tread the celestial light, convey divine will with solemn demeanor, extend benevolence to the Three Realms, and uphold rituals above all other officials."
