The original text has no recorded author. Textual research indicates it was composed by Taoist priests in Sichuan in the early Northern Song Dynasty.
It was originally one chapter ofThe Five Dipper Scriptures, and the version inThe Daozangwas later separated as an independent scripture, included in the Original Text Category ofThe Dongshen Section.
This scripture purports that in the first year of Yongshou of the Han Dynasty, afterLaoziimpartedThe Northern Dipper Scripture of Innate Fate for Prolonging Lifeto Heavenly MasterZhang Daoling, he bestowed this scripture further. It proclaims that the Northern Dipper is the supreme abode that governs life and death, nurturing all living beings and sustaining all creatures under heaven.
"All sentient beings, having received the vital energy of heaven and earth and the ordinance of yin and yang, be they male or female, destined for longevity or premature death, their mortal fate is all governed by the divine mandate of the Northern Dipper."
Therefore, mortal beings shall follow the Taoist rituals taught by Laozi, pay homage to the Northern Dipper Star Lords at all times, and by doing so, they may safeguard their physical life and ensure its eternal continuance.
