Lie Xian Zhuan — 鉤翼夫人 (Lady Gouyi)
列仙传·鉤翼夫人
Original Chinese 原文
Lady Gouyi was a native of Qi and bore the surname Zhao. When she was young, she loved quietude and the Taoist path of inner stillness; she lay ill for six years with her right hand curled in a fist and ate little food. A diviner of atmospheric signs said: "There is the aura of an esteemed person to the northeast." They searched for and found her. When summoned, she was of striking beauty and imposing appearance. Emperor Wu of Han uncovered her hand, found a jade hook, and her hand soon straightened; she was then favored and gave birth to Emperor Zhao. Later, Emperor Wu had her killed; her corpse did not grow cold after burial and emitted fragrance for a whole month. After Emperor Zhao ascended the throne, he reburied her; there were only silk shoes inside the coffin. Therefore, her palace was named Gouyi. Later, to avoid the taboo of his name, it was changed to Yimiao. There is a divine shrine and pavilion within its precincts.
Original Chinese 原文
A delicate and gentle maiden, the temple's talisman bestowed a hook upon her. She bore an auspicious heir; thus, the imperial lineage enjoyed peace and prosperity. Wu's failure to understand her virtue led him to betray benevolence and bring about enmity. She surrendered her life to be killed, yet her corpse vanished while her fragrance continued to flow.
