Heshang Gong Chapter 24 – 苦恩 (Bitter Grace)

Heshang Gong's Commentary on Laozi

📖 Taoist Scripture🖋 Heshang Gong (河上公)🔢 Chapter 24 of 81🌐 English & Chinese

Section 1 —

Those who do not advance will not stand firm. Qi, to advance. This means that those who are greedy for power and fame, striving for achievements and honor, cannot maintain a firm standing or practice the Way for long. Those who act with arrogance will not be able to proceed. If one considers oneself noble and looks down upon others, the people will collectively shun them, preventing them from moving forward. Those who boast of themselves are not truly wise. A person who shows off their appearance, thinking it beautiful, and displays their actions as if they conform to the Way, does not realize that their form is ugly and their conduct vulgar. Those who consider themselves always right will not gain recognition. One who believes they are correct while condemning others, the people collectively conceal them, preventing their merits from being acknowledged. Those who boast of their achievements have no real merit. This refers to those who constantly take credit for their accomplishments, thereby losing the actual recognition they deserve from others. Those who are self-conceited will not endure long. Those who like to exaggerate their own importance cannot last long. In terms of the Way, it is said: leftover food and superfluous actions. Zhuì, greed. Those who are conceited and boastful, in the way of governing a country, daily impose excessive levies and surplus salaries as acts of greed. Things or people may come to despise them. When such a person holds office, they desire to harm others in every action; therefore, nothing or no one fails to fear and despise them. Therefore, those who follow the Way do not act in such a manner. This means that people of the Way would not reside in such a country.
