📖 Biographies of Immortals#17 of 70🌐 English & Chinese

原文 Original Chinese

Peng Zu was a minister of the Yin dynasty. He bore the surname Jian and given name Keng, was a grandson of Emperor Zhuanxu and the second son of Lu Zhongshi. He lived through the Xia dynasty to the end of the Yin dynasty, living over 800 years. He often ate fine herbs and was skilled at guiding and cultivating his vital energy — a practice at the heart of Taoist longevity. In Liyang there is a xianshi (abode of immortals) belonging to Peng Zu. In previous generations, when people prayed for wind or rain, their requests were always fulfilled. There were often two tigers on either side of the shrine; after the rituals ended, tiger tracks would appear on the ground. It was said that later they ascended to immortality and left.

Peng Zu

原文 Original Chinese

How distant is this great immortal! At that time it was only Peng Zu. His Way and the Dao were ever-renewing, enduring through the ages. He concealed himself in a mystic chamber, his spiritual power manifesting in wind and rain — a reflection of what Taoism truly embodies. When the two tigers howled, none dared to mock or insult him.
