Lie Xian Zhuan — 郗子 (Hanzi)
列仙传·郗子
Original Chinese 原文
Hanzi was a native of Shu who liked to let his dogs run freely. At that time, one of the dogs ran into a sacred mountain cave, and Hanzi followed it inside. After staying for more than ten nights, he traveled hundreds of li and finally emerged on top of a mountain. There were pavilions, palaces, and government offices on the summit; tall pine trees stood densely, and immortal officials guarded it with strict vigilance. He saw an old woman in charge of washing fish, who gave him a sealed talisman letter and medicine, instructing him to return them to Qiao Jun, the magistrate of Chengdu. Magistrate Qiao opened the envelope and found fish eggs inside. He placed them in a pond, raised them for one year, and they all took on the shape of dragons — sacred creatures of the Taoist celestial order. He then returned the talisman to the mountain; the dog's color turned redder, and it was often accompanied by a long-feathered bird following Hanzi. After traveling back and forth for more than one hundred years as a Taoist immortal, he finally stayed on the mountain and occasionally came down to protect his clan. The people of Shu built a shrine at the entrance of the cave, where drumbeats and music could often be heard. Thousands of li to the southwest, many people jointly honored him with sacrifices.
