Heshang Gong Chapter 21 – 虛心 (Emptying the Mind)
老子河上公章句 · 第21章 · Heshang Gong's Commentary on Laozi
Section 1 — 第1节
The appearance of Kong De is grand — Kong means great; a person with great virtue can embrace all things, accept filth and turbidity, and dwell in humility. It follows only the Dao — Wei means alone; a person of great virtue does not follow the ways of the world, but alone adheres to the Dao. The Dao, as an entity, is only vaguely and faintly discernible — the Dao in relation to all things appears only vaguely and fleetingly, as it has no fixed form or location. Fleeting and vague, yet within it there are forms — the Dao is only fleeting and vague in form, yet uniquely contains the patterns and images of all things. Vague and fleeting, yet within it there are entities — the Dao is only vague and fleeting; within it lies the One, which manages generation and transformation by establishing form through qi (vital energy). Deep and obscure, yet within it there is essence — the Dao is only deep and obscure in form; within it lies substantial essence, where spirits and clarity interact, and yin and yang converge.
Section 2 — 第2节
Its essence is very genuine — the presence of vital energy is extremely true, without any embellishment. Within it there is trustworthiness — the Dao conceals merit and hides its name; its trustworthiness lies within. From ancient times to the present, its name has never departed — since ancient times until now, the Dao has always been present and has not left. To oversee all beginnings — Yue means to receive; Fu means beginning; the Dao bestows and provides, all things originate from it, receiving qi from the Dao. How do I know that all things receive qi from the Dao? By this — meaning now: all things today receive the Dao's vital energy to be born; their movement and rest are impossible without the Dao.
