Heshang Gong Chapter 68 – 配天 (Aligning with Heaven)
老子河上公章句 · 第68章 · Heshang Gong's Commentary on Laozi
Section 1 — 第1节
The virtuous leader of men does not rely on military might. This means that virtue and morality are valued, while martial force is not favored. The skilled warrior does not become angry. One who is good at waging war through the Dao suppresses evil within his heart and mind, eliminates calamity before it arises, and thus has no need for punishment or anger. The one who is good at defeating the enemy does not engage in direct confrontation. One skilled in overcoming enemies through the Dao draws those nearby with benevolence and attracts distant ones with virtue; without competing directly with the enemy, they will naturally submit of their own accord. Those who are good at using people place themselves beneath them. Those who are skilled in employing others to assist and support them always maintain a humble and deferential attitude toward others. This is called the virtue of not contending. It refers to the above act of placing oneself beneath others. This is precisely the Dao and De of not competing with others. This is called drawing upon the strength of people. Being able to place oneself beneath others means one can harness the power and loyalty of subordinates. This is known as aligning with Heaven, the ultimate principle of ancient times. One who can practice this has virtue that matches Heaven. This is the most essential Dao of ancient times. ---
