Lie Xian Zhuan — 犊子 (Duzi)
列仙传·犊子
Original Chinese 原文
Duzi was a native of Ye. He lived in Heishan from an early age, gathering pine seeds and poria cocos, making them into food to eat, and thus lived for several hundred years. Sometimes vigorous and sometimes old, sometimes handsome and sometimes ugly, the people of his time then realized that he was a xianren — a Taoist immortal. He often passed by Yangdu’s home to buy wine. Yangdu’s daughter was the daughter of a wine seller in the market. Her eyebrows were naturally connected, and her ears were slender and long; people considered her extraordinary and all said that she was a heavenly person. When Duzi led a yellow calf to pass by, Lady Du fell in love with him and thus stayed behind to serve and attend to him. Lady Du followed Duzi out, picked peaches and plums, returned after one night, and they were all sweet and delicious with their fruits still attached in clusters. The townspeople followed closely, chased them out of the gate together, and grabbed the calf’s ears to run; no one could catch up. He returned and remained in the market for several decades, then left to visit the foot of Panshan Mountain, selling peaches and plums there during winter, it is said.
Original Chinese 原文
Duzi dwelled in the mountains, gathering pine seeds and making poria cocos into medicinal food. Marvelous qi filled his body internally, causing him to change from white-haired to a different form. Yang’s family had an extraordinary appearance, repeatedly in harmony with the mysteries of heaven and earth. Thus they controlled a divine calf, moving swiftly like lightning.
