吾言甚易知,甚易行。天下莫能知,莫能行。言有宗,事有君。夫唯无知,是以不我知。知我者希,则我者贵。是以圣人被褐怀玉。

English Translation — James Legge

My words are very easy to know, and very easy to practise; but there is no one in the world who is able to know and able to practise them.

There is an originating and all-comprehending principle in my words, and an authoritative law for the things which I enforce. It is because they do not know these, that men do not know me. As shown in Chapter 56, those who know do not speak and those who speak do not know — the Dao cannot be grasped through cleverness alone.

They who know me are few, and I am on that account the more to be prized. It is thus that the sage wears a poor garb of hair cloth, while he carries his jade in his bosom — outwardly plain, inwardly precious.

✦ Key Insight

Chapter 70 is one of Lao Tzu’s most personal statements. His words are simple and easy — yet no one understands or follows them. Why? Because his words have a root principle and his actions have a governing law, and people who do not perceive these cannot perceive him. The fewer who know him, the more precious he becomes. The closing image is unforgettable: the sage wears coarse cloth but carries jade in his bosom. Outwardly plain, inwardly luminous — this is the Taoist ideal of hidden virtue.


Classical Commentaries — 古典注释

王弼注 Wang Bi's Commentary

吾言甚易知,甚易行。天下莫能知,莫能行。可不出户窥牆而知,故曰,甚易知也。无为而成,故曰甚易行也。惑于躁欲,故曰,莫之能知也。迷于荣利,故曰,莫之能行也。言有宗,事有君。宗,万物之宗也。君,万物之主也。夫唯无知,是以不我知。以其言有宗,事有君之故,故有知之人不得不知之也。知我者希,则我者贵。唯深故知者希也,知我益希,我亦无匹,故曰,知我者希,则我者贵也。是以圣人被褐怀玉。被褐者,同其塵,怀玉者,宝其真也。圣人之所以难知,以其同塵而不殊,怀玉而不渝,故难知而为贵也。

Wang Bi says his words are easy to know and easy to practice, yet no one can know or practice them. Because people do not understand this, they do not understand him. The sage wears coarse cloth but carries jade in his bosom.

河上公注 Heshang Gong's Commentary

吾言甚易知,甚易行。老子言:吾所言省而易知,约而易行。天下莫能知,莫能行。人恶柔弱,好刚强也。言有宗,事有君。我所言有宗祖根本,事有君臣上下,世人不知者,非我之无德,心与我之反也。夫唯无知,是以不我知。夫唯世人之无知者,是我德之暗,不见于外,穷微极妙,故无知也。知我者希,则我者贵。希,少也。唯达道者乃能知我,故为贵也。是以圣人被褐怀玉。被褐者薄外,怀玉者厚内,匿宝藏德,不以示人也。

Heshang Gong says his teachings are simple and easy to practice, but people love hardness and hate gentleness. The sage wears coarse cloth outwardly but carries precious jade inwardly — hiding treasure and virtue without display.
