Heshang Gong Chapter 4 – 無源 (Without Source)
老子河上公章句 · 第4章 · Heshang Gong's Commentary on Laozi
Section 1 — 第1节
The Dao is central and thus used — Chong means zhong (center). The Dao remains anonymous and hides praise; its function lies in the center. Or it does not overflow — Huo means chang (constant). The Dao is always humble and never overflows with fullness. It is profound, like the ancestor of all things — the Dao is deep and unfathomable, seeming to be the ancestral source known by all things. Dull its sharpness — Rui means jin (advance). When people desire to sharpen their efforts and pursue fame and achievement, they should restrain themselves; this is in accordance with the Dao, which does not reveal itself. Untie its entanglements — Fen means jie hen (resolving resentment). One should contemplate the Dao's non-action to resolve them. Harmonize its brilliance — although one may have unique insight and clarity, one should know obscurity and not use it to disturb others. Blend with the dust of the world — one should blend with the filth and dust of the common people and not set oneself apart as special. Profound, yet it seems to exist — one should be profoundly tranquil and still; thus, one can remain long-lasting without perishing. Laozi said: I do not know; this is where the Dao originates. It existed before the Emperor of Forms — the Dao exists by itself before Heaven and Earth; this means that the Dao was born prior to Heaven and Earth. Until now, those who remain are able to be tranquil and profound; they do not trouble themselves with desires. This is why people should cultivate their bodies by following the Dao.
