原文 Original Chinese

Ge You was a Qiang person. During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, he liked to carve wooden sheep and sell them. One day, riding a sheep into western Shu, the kings, marquises, and nobles of Shu followed him up Mount Sui. Mount Sui is located to the southwest of Emei Mountain, and its height has no limit. Those who followed him did not return again, but all attained the Dao of immortality. Thus, a local proverb says: "To obtain one peach from Mount Sui, even if one does not attain immortality, is still sufficient for wealth and prestige." There are said to be dozens of shrines established at the foot of the mountain.

The sacred mountains of Taoism have long served as gateways to immortality. Just as Ge You led followers up Mount Sui, the Zhongnan Mountain tradition similarly drew generations of Taoist recluses seeking transcendence far from the world of men.

Ge You's story echoes that of Jie Zitui, who also disappeared into the mountains never to return — both figures represent the Taoist ideal of the sage who vanishes at the moment of highest attainment, leaving behind only legend and shrines.

葛由

原文 Original Chinese

木可为羊,羊亦可灵。灵在葛由,一致无经。爱陏崇维,舒翅扬声。知术者仙,得桃者荣。

Wood can become a sheep, and a sheep can also become spiritual. The spirit lies in Ge You; the principle is unified without needing scripture. Ascending Mount Sui so lofty, he spreads his wings and proclaims his voice. Those who know the art become immortals; those who obtain peaches gain honor.

This eulogy captures the essence of Taoist transformation — the idea that any ordinary object, guided by the right inner cultivation, can become a vessel of the sacred. Rongcheng Gong similarly mastered the arts of inner transformation, absorbing the energies of heaven and earth to achieve immortality. The longevity of Peng Zu, sustained across centuries through breath and diet, reflects the same principle: that the Dao, once truly known, dissolves the boundary between the mortal and the divine. As Laozi taught, the sage does not strive — yet nothing is left undone.
