Lie Xian Zhuan — 陆通 (Lu Tong)
列仙传·陆通
原文 Original Chinese
Lu Tong was a madman like Yunchu Kuang Jieyu. He liked cultivating health, eating the fruits of Tuolu wood and wujing seeds. He traveled to famous mountains; on Emei Mountain in Shu, people saw him generation after generation, and he remained there for several hundred years.
Lu Tong's practice of health cultivation through diet echoes the methods of Rongcheng Gong, who absorbed the essence of heaven and earth to achieve longevity — both exemplify the Taoist path of nurturing life through harmony with nature rather than force.
His wandering across sacred peaks also recalls the Yellow Emperor, who sought immortality by traveling to the great mountains and consulting the sages of antiquity.
原文 Original Chinese
Jieyu took pleasure in the Dao, cultivating his nature while concealing his brilliance. He criticized Confucius with a satirical tone, warning that the phoenix was declining. He regulated his breath to achieve harmony and preserved his mind in subtlety. He strode with lofty steps on sacred mountains, emitting long howls atop Emei Mountain.
Like Jieni the hermit, who also withdrew from the corrupt world of the Spring and Autumn period, Jieyu chose the mountains over the court — a recurring Taoist ideal of the sage who sees through worldly ambition. His lineage as a wandering immortal connects him to Laozi himself, who similarly departed civilization, leaving only his wisdom behind.
